Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)
Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) is a powerful analytical tool that builds on well-known process hazard analysis techniques to evaluate the risk of a hazard scenario. The risk is them compared with the organisation’s risk tolerance criteria to help it decide if existing or proposed safeguards are adequate, or if additional safeguards are needed.
In this practical 2-day workshop, you will learn about the fundamentals of LOPA, its advantages and limitations, and how you can leverage it to make decisions about layers of protection used in a hazard scenario.
By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
- Define an independent protection layer (IPL)
- Differentiate between safeguards and independent protection layers (IPL)
- Decide if a process needs a safety instrumented system (SIS) Assign a safety integrity level (SIL) to SIS
- Understand the safety lifecycle of SIS
